Stinger

Let's take a closer look at one of the match racers we saw on the previous page, YS#114, Robert Lander's 1967 Stinger.

The close-up at right shows the front end treatment that distinguished Stingers from stock Corvairs. The grill bar was removed, exposing the trunk lock, reducing weight, and providing a clean path for the Yenko racing stripe. The area below the bumper and the headlight bezels matched the color of the stripe. Finally, a Yenko Stinger insignia was applied to the driver's side of the front valance.

Robert's '67, shown here at the Yenko Supercar Reunion in 1998, was one of the COPO batch of '67 Stingers.

This photo shows the unique character of the Yenko Stinger Fiberglas rear deck lid with its molded-in spoiler and cool air slots.

The photo at right shows the interior of Robert's '67. Unlike the 1966 Yenko Stingers, which were based on the Corsa series, the '67 Stinger was based on the Monza, the top-of-the-line model in that production year. It is for that reason that this Stinger is equipped with the instrument cluster of the Monza, rather than the 6-instrument Corsa cluster. Yenko substituted a tachometer for the clock in the center pod and installed a grouping of auxiliary gauges under the center section of the dash.

Dashboard differences aside, the '67 Yenko was every bit a Stinger, with an engine based on the 140hp, 4-carburetor, production engine, and available in the various stages of Stinger tune as detailed in the specifications appearing at the end of this section.

The photo at right, taken by CORSA photographer, Ron Fedorczak, captured the Landers Stinger indoors, at the 1998 CORSA convention in St. Louis.

Robert's Stinger was delivered in Stage I tune, as were almost all 1967s. The wheels were widened by Yenko from the stock 5" width, to 7 inches. The tires pictured above are vintage Goodyear rain slicks known as Blue Streak "Sports Car Special," 6.00x13 with the 6.00 denoting tread width. Because of the age of the tires and the fact they're not street legal, Rob acquired a one-of-a-kind set of 13" Shelby Europa wheels (Minilite replicas) that Seth Emerson purchased "undrilled" in the early 70's. Seth had them "drilled" to fit a late model bolt pattern. They sport P205/70R13 B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A's. This large size is no longer available in the BFG line and is only available in a couple of other brands.
