The cars of the V-8 Registry

As promised, here's Harlan Colburn's highly modified 1967 Corvair racer. It started life as a Corvair 500, and was converted to V-8 power using a Crown conversion kit.

This is the car that won the Yenko award at the '98 CORSA national Corvair convention for posting the fastest time, 1:10.43, at the Gateway 1.6 mile road course time trials and the fastest time of the day at the autocross, with a 17.885. Way to drive, Harlan!

The roadster uses a 383 cubic inch, 360 HP small block.

Engine cooling is handled by twin mid-mounted radiators.

Harlan interchanges 3 differentials with 4.11, 3.55 and 3.27:1 gears, all prepared by Rear Engine Specialists in Denver. All are positraction units and he has yet to break one.

The one piece Fiberglass front end tilts for access to the suspension, steering gear and the fuel cell. Fiberglass doors and a Yenko decklid help keep the weight of the car near 2000 pounds. Aluminum heads on the new engine should take the car under 2000 pounds.

Brakes are stock Corvair with a dual master cylinder and braided lines.

The stock front suspension is set up with nylon bushings and the bottom arm is parallel with the ground. 1 degree of negative camber is used. Steering is through a factory quick steering arrangement.

Rear suspension is Harlan's own design; a 4-link trailing arm suspension, with anti-squat and toe contol. The car is lowered so bottom link is parallel with the ground and set up with 1 degree of negative camber. Carrera coilovers are used all-around.

Here, Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) racer Seth Emerson at speed behind the wheel of Harlan's ride. "Man, is it fast!" says Seth, "and getting faster each time, too."

The car hunkers down on 13" wheels, 11 inches wide at the front, 14 1/2 at the rear.

Harlan and his father run at local  SCCA events.

Here's Harlan in a speed blur at Gateway '98. The photo was taken by Ken Holm, who owns  one of the hotter variety of 6-cylinder Corvairs, a Yenko Stinger (YS-116). Ken mentioned when he sent the photo that he panned the camera during the shot to create a "great sense of speed." Mission accomplished, Ken!
