2001: A Corvair Odyssey

In the years since this site's Visitor Survey was introduced, Corvair-powered sand rail and dune buggy devotees have been clamoring for some coverage. Before the Odyssey, I hadn't had an opportunity to photograph any, so I was thrilled to discover Canyon Man, an awesome sand rail owned by Mark Irons from Clarkston, Michigan. Entered in the Specialty class at the People's Choice Car Show, this is no run-of-the-mill sand rail. Canyon Man seats four and features a highly modified Corvair engine.

Mark wasn't available to provide details of the wild, custom built turbo-charged engine as I took these pictures, but the shot below tells its own story. The engine is mounted ahead of the transaxle and features a custom six runner intake manifold, trick cylinder heads, electric cooling fan, headers and a number of other performance modifications.
