Marcel, Manuela, and a Corvair named Angelita

Let's shift our focus to Angelita's interior, where we'll see the custom sunroof and associated headliner. Both have withstood the tortures of more than forty years of service. If you are familiar with the appearance of a stock Corvair headliner, you'll appreciate the differences. For example, in the stock configuration, the dome light mounts directly to the roof structure. However, with the sunroof sliding back into the area above the dome light, the light must be mounted to the headliner. As usual, one modification leads to another.

Sunroof operation is manual, and is accomplished by pulling down on a rectangular locking lever and pushing rearward. As the roof opens, a wind deflector pops up to control drafts, and the user can lock the roof in any position desired.

The chrome object between the rear view mirror and the sunroof is a compass. Installed during the 1970s, it is in very good condition and does not interfere with the rear view mirror.

Complete disassembly and removal of dash components was undertaken. Everything was inspected, including the wiring harnesses, connectors, and the emergency brake and clutch cables. Anything that didn't pass inspection was repaired or replaced.

Below, we see the result of painstaking attention-to-detail. The Corsa's custom green exterior color is carried into the car in the speaker grill and center dashboard areas, the metal areas of the door panels, and in the carpet and custom floor mats. Note the original (optional) telescopic steering column and sport wheel.

Another unique aspect of this Corvair is the adjustable backrest on the driver's seat. This custom feature was installed before Marcel bought the car. While restoring the seats, he noted the apparatus was properly welded into frame of the seat, and decided to keep it. Its range of adjustment enhances driver comfort.

At the right, we see the chrome shifter base that was exclusive to the Corsa series. Stepping up to the Corsa also bought you an array of performance gauges; tachometer, cylinder head temp and manifold pressure gauges, extended range speedometer and trip odometer.
