2001: A Corvair Odyssey
One of the last Corvairs built at Willow Run in 1969, a Dover White Corvair 500 with a blue interior, was modified by Yenko Chevrolet to serve as a high-speed (125-130 MPH) testing platform for Goodyear's 13-inch tires. Modifications were extensive, including but not limited to; a very robust roll cage, a large oil cooler mounted behind a fresh air grill cut into the license plate mounting area under the front bumper, a Stage IV engine with radically modified carburetors and a wild camshaft. This was YS-9700, the only 1969 Corvair Yenko conversion built by Yenko Chevrolet. Unlike the Yenko Stingers that had come before it, YS-9700 retained its stock rear deck lid, was not fitted with side panels over the rear quarter-windows, or painted with the Stinger paint scheme. The car appeared in 1969 the way you see it below—all white— with Goodyear Tire Testing Division logos on its doors. The car's paint was restored to its correct Goodyear scheme by its new owner Robert Dunahugh of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He purchased the car and repainted it in time for the convention. |
1969 Yenko Robert ran the car in Street Modified and recorded lap times of 35.46, 33.82, and 34.97 seconds. Not bad, considering he hasn't had the car long enough to optimize the power train. We'll be watching! |
Yenko one more time At right, more fresh paint and another Yenko, this time a street driven '66 Stinger piloted by James Rice and competing in Competition class. James recorded three quick laps at 33.74, 32.97 and 32.67 seconds. |
Can't get enough! Rounding up our trio of Yenko's is Al Huston of Hammond, Indiana running in Street Modified. Al did not finish his first lap, and stopped the clock at 38.94 and 38.25 seconds in laps 2 and 3. Not his best day, but good fun anyway. |
