2001: A Corvair Odyssey

Contributing to 2001: A Corvair Odyssey was an impressive array of Corvair 95 series trucks; Rampsides, Greenbriers, Corvans and Loadsides. The popularity of Corvair trucks seems to be on the rise, partly because of the general trend toward truck ownership, and partly because Corvair trucks in restorable shape are relatively inexpensive to buy in spite of their increasing rarity. Corvair truck production of 127,221 units constituted 7.1% of total car and truck production.

The Corvair 95 series appeared in the 1961 model year, with a first year production total of 47,557 units. Totals slipped in '62 and '63 and when Chevrolet introduced its front engine/rear drive Chevy Van for the 1964 model year, the resulting fragmentation of sales drove Corvair 95 series production down to 15,199 units. The following year, as the redesigned second generation Corvair was introduced, the Greenbrier briefly reappeared, essentially unchanged, before being dropped from the roster.

It is notable that the Corvair 95 truck series did not receive the new rear suspension system of the second generation cars. Only 1,528 Corvair 95s were produced for the 1965 model year.
